It is true that people don’t necessarily want to hear the complete truth. But there is something to be said for making a clean cut. If someone tells me they aren’t interested I delete all forms of contact information so I will never contact them again. Worst case scenario, if I’m having a bad day I may make a snippy comment on the way out. But at least it’s over and done for both people. If someone just fades out I will probably check back in every now and then to try my luck. And 1/4 of the time it results in success.
I think the best example I’ve heard is “Hey Bob. You’re a really nice guy and it was a pleasure to meet you. I just don’t think the chemistry is there for us though. Best of luck in your search.”
